Itara means light in the native language of Rwanda and we are working to spread light to schools and families in need. Itara Solar Solutions is a social venture started by BYU students looking to replace kerosene lamps in Africa and increase the quality of education facilities. Our current initiative is putting a focus on the education system by donating children's books to schools. We then provide a system where students get can get access to lights and read at home.
In rural Rwanda kerosene lamps, like the one shown to the left, are a main source to light their homes. The lamps we distribute are cheaper, more durable and shine brighter than kerosene lamps. Most importantly they do not omit harmful pollutants. To find out more about the problem, read this CNN article.
We work to fulfill the pillars stated in VISION 2020. Vision 2020 is government initiative set to increase the percentage of the population with access to electricity. We are working with district leaders and mayors to distribute lanterns and support this government goal. Click here find out more about VISION 2020 in Rwanda.
